The Graphic Exchange
23rd October 2009I’m always on the look out for inspiration and I can’t believe that I’ve never come across this resource before. Jam packed with fantastic work, separated into categories. One for the bookmarks!
Andy Altman from the ‘Why Not Associates’
22nd October 2009Andy Alman was talking at the watershed last night organized by the West of England design forum. The Why Nots, now a team of 8, started in 1987 after studying at the RCA. I quite like the philosophy behind the name ‘Why Not’ — ‘We never had a plan so nothing could go wrong’.
Some of the work shown:
- Next — The Bible of mail order.
- Smirnoff Ice posters.
- Museum installation ”Kobi in Japan’.
- Gordon Young — sandblasted type installation in Morecambe.
- Apocalypse poster.
- Ad for BBC match of the day.
- Canvas logo.
Live drawing
14th October 2009I went to Mr Wolf’s on St Stephen’s Street (Bristol) last night. Quite interesting to see the live drawing. 2 artists working independently and then swapping over to join up their illustrative styles to make one picture.
When less is more
8th September 2009Great article on simplicity in the Economist.
This overarching idea of simplicity is what Mies van der Rohe, architect and leader of the Bauhaus movement in Germany during the 1920s, meant by his motto “less is more”. It’s what now, with latter-day eloquence, is called “KISS” (short for “keep it simple, stupid”).
Information is Beautiful

Planners+Creatives+Design+Media=Good.
20th April 2009A really interesting (as usual!) blog post from Rory Sutherland on who makes better planners – planners or creatives.
Modified to our business:
Planners>Creatives>Design*>Media=Bad
Planners+Creatives+Design*+Media=Good.
*I‘m increasingly of the opinion that the designing of templates and the designing of wireframes should all come under the heading of “design” i.e. our design dept is not just Matt and Jon, it’s Pete and Iwein too. Creative (i.e. ideas generation) is something different.
In terms of talent, we are missing a copy writer (ideas person) and a media planner (with digital expertise). It’s on our medium term business plan to fill these gaps in the line-up.
